Faculty of the Genetics Department

We have made a concerted effort to build the strongest possible Department while drawing upon the full diversity of talented people in the field. There are currently 47 faculty members of whom 31 are tenured, many having begun their careers in the Department. 25% of our tenured faculty are women.

Our faculty is geographically located in two main units and in Harvard-affiliated hospitals. The two main groups (see History) each have 12 faculty members. These units are located on the central Quadrangle of Harvard Medical School's Longwood Campus and at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). The 12 additional faculty members are located at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Children's Hospital, and Brigham & Women's Hospital. All faculty members of the Department are actively engaged in investigation (see individual faculty pages ) and teaching, regardless of location, and participate in regular data presentations, faculty meetings, and Departmental retreats. The Chairman of the Department (Clifford Tabin) and the Administrative Director (Vonda Shannon) are located in the Quadrangle-based unit, while the Vice Chairman (Robert Kingston) is located in the MGH-based unit (the MGH Department of Molecular Biology) where he serves as Chief of the unit. While the two main parts of the Department function independently in their internal administration and have distinct intellectual cultures, the Chair and Vice-Chair work closely together to integrate the research efforts and promote the cohesion of the entire Department.


Meet the Faculty

Louis M. Kunkel, Ph.D.
The Kunkel laboratory works on understanding the pathogenesis and genetics underlying the muscular dystrophies. They are attempting therapy of the muscular dystrophies in mice through the use of adult stem cells from muscle. Recently, they have developed zebrafish models of the human dystrophies in an attempt to screen for suppressor mutations. They have also expanded their genetic research into looking at complex disease traits such as Autism and Interstitial Cystitis.
