Graduate Student

Janete SantosResearch Interest: As a PhD student at the University of Coimbra, and a visiting student at Harvard my research interests are focused on the development of novel therapeutic strategies to treat Machado-Joseph disease (MJD). MJD is a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease that is one of a large group of polyglutamine diseases. I am particularly interested on the unravelling of new molecular mechanisms underlying MJD neuropathology, mainly on the mechanisms that directly or indirectly involve changes to sirtuins and NAD+. The discovery of new gene targets or pharmacological therapeutic avenues are important not only to MJD, but may also provide clues for other polyglutamine diseases that affect tens of thousands of people worldwide.
