Associate Director, Center for Human Genetic Research

Massachusetts General Hospital Research Institute (MGHRI) is seeking a collaborative, strategic-thinking scientific and administrative leader to assume the position of Associate Director, MGH Center for Human Genetic Research.

The MGH Center for Human Genetic Research is a multidisciplinary cross-departmental center with the central mission of facilitating the genetic research cycle. The research projects carried out by investigators touch every stage of the genetic research cycle. Every project begins with the participation of patients and their families and progresses through this cycle.

Our faculty believes that understanding the fundamental disease mechanism and identification of modifier genes can lead to improved diagnostic capacity, better disease management and the development of rational treatments.

Our center is housed in 45,000 square feet of wet lab, dry lab, office and clinic space in the Richard B. Simches Research Center and is comprised of 35 faculty members and approximately 180 other staff members.

In collaboration with the Director of the Center for Human Genetic Research (CHGR) and the Sr. Administrative Director for MGH Research, the Associate Director will provide scientific and administrative leadership for the Center. The incumbent will provide oversight of the Center’s scientific activities, development of a strategic plan for the Center with a focus on genomic medicine, and implementation of key strategic initiatives within the Center. Working with senior leadership, the Associate Director will play a key role in the development and facilitation of critical changes within the Center to prepare and respond to ongoing challenges, as they relate to improved research operations, funding, strategic vision and internal/external communication. The incumbent will draw on a broad understanding of clinical and research practices, as well as comprehension of change management and communication strategies.

The Associate Director should display a high degree of initiative and independent judgment to continually assess and direct a wide range of Center issues, including research operations and space management, talent retention and recruitment, marketing and communication efforts, project development, and the creation of Center statistics and annual reports. In addition, the Associate Director must have the skill-set to collaborate closely with clinical departments, hospital leadership and Partners related areas to carry out the day-to-day operations of the CHGR and plan/execute strategic initiatives that will enhance the mission of the Center.

The qualified candidate would have a Ph.D. in genetics or related field, with 3+ years post-doctoral training and/or scientific contributions to the field and demonstrated supervisory experience.

He/she should also have the ability to gain credibility and trust with multiple layers of a complex organization; to provide support, direction and development to staff and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills; have exceptional organizational and analytical skills and the flexibility to handle multiple tasks and deadline pressures; ability to make decisions quickly and independently; have an open, honest, objective manner; ability to effectively collaborate across MGH and Partners to carry out the day-to-day operations and enhance the mission of CHGR.
